Child is a big Jim Benton fan. Mr. Benton's Franny K. Stein and Dear Dumb Diary books are delightful.
Jim Benton is also the creator of the rude, crude, tongue-in-cheek It's Happy Bunny, which is also a favorite in our household.
Here are some Happy Bunny samples, just in case you haven't seen the sweet little jerks before:

I ordered a Happy Bunny book of Valentine cards for Child to give out at school on Valentine's Day. When it arrived, however, I quickly changed my mind. The cards are a laugh riot and I would love to give them to my own friends, but there's no way Child can give them out at her elementary school!
The Valentines have hilariously rude sentiments on them like:
- You're lovable. ... When you don't talk.
- Buy me stuff and I'll be nicer.
- I know how you feel. ... I love me too!
- Let's be friends. ... We'll be the kind of friends who throw up a little every time we see each other.
- It's not my fault you're icky.
- Look how nice I am not laughing at your dumbness.
- You look hot. ... I hope someone filled your water dish.
- Everyone is beautiful on the inside. ... If you think bones and guts are beautiful.
- I love everybody. ... Except you pinheads.
And my personal favorite:
- I'm writing a song about you. ... What rhymes with Dorkface?

Love these - but yeah for me not for a kid. There's a lot of adult humor marketed to kids these days I think.
