I was given this Christmas cactus years ago by a friend at my previous job. He was returning to Norway after working in Canada for several years and wanted to find good homes for his office plants. I seriously questioned the wisdom of giving a plant to me, since I have a completely brown thumb, but I set a goal for myself to keep that cactus alive long enough to see it bloom once.
Surprisingly, I was able to keep it alive a lot longer than that! I've lost count, but I figure I've been the proud parent of this plant for somewhere between 5 and 10 years!
It's absolutely beautiful when it blooms, with fragile pale pink blossoms. The curious thing about this cactus, though, is that it gets its dates mixed up a bit. For many years it bloomed in October, which is not so far off from Christmas, I guess. But then one year it decided to flower in August. And another year in June!
For the last couple of years it has managed to hold off blossoming until November. I suppose that's probably the closest to Christmas I can hope for.
Is it Christmas yet?

It's pretty hard to kill a cactus, so it's a great plant to boost your confidence :)
I have quite the brown thumb myself...if it wasn't for my husband, all the potted plants we've had would have died within the first month of having them.
I love your blog...found you by clicking 'next blog.' I just hope to be able to read all of your entries...you're very entertaining!
Liv: You're right. A lesser plant would have died years ago. :o)
Mindy: Welcome, and thanks for stopping by!
