This is my 1,001st post!
For only 15 bucks, you too can be a "virgin" again.
A product that simulates virginity is causing an uproar in Egypt. The device, used to fool men on their wedding night by simulating "proof" of their new bride's "purity," is being sold in several countries in the Middle East. The product is no joke. In some cultures, there is a heavy stigma for women who participate in premarital sex.
Here's how it works: The device is inserted into the vagina and emits a small amount of fake blood when "triggered." For women who don't have the money to shell out for the popular and illegal hymen-repair surgery, the $15 contraption is a safer and cheaper alternative.
The product is currently being targeted by Egyptian scholar Abdul Mouti Bayoumi, who believes anyone caught importing the controversial device should be put to death for "spreading vice."
(via: momlogic)
Just think of the women this product could be helping here in North America! I knew a few well-used girls in high school who swore to their boyfriends they were virgins. This handy dandy little re-virginizer would have made those slutty little lies so much more believable.

One of those days
9:00 AM: What th ... how'd that get there? I seem to have a blob of dried toothpaste stuck in my hair! Unbelievable. I've been walking around the office for the past hour and a half like this!
12:00 noon: Good grief. I sat in a meeting all morning with an obvious smear of white toothpaste on my red top. What do they put in toothpaste, exactly, that makes it so hard to wipe off?
5:00 PM: I'm home now and ... damn it! I have dried toothpaste on my neck.

Thought for the day
"We've all been raised by television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off." ~ Tyler Durden, Fight Club

9/11
Back in the old days of the Internet, before Twitter was even a twinkle in Jack Dorsey's eye, we had listservs, which were, for the time period, a very effective way of disseminating information to large groups of people in a somewhat timely fashion.
For many years I was a subscriber to a professional listserv on which members from around the world discussed records management issues. On September 11, 2001, I first learned about the 9/11 tragedies from that listserv.

I was just told that a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center.
***************

Two planes crashed into two of the World Trade towers, about fifteen minutes
apart. Looks like terrorism. I'm in midtown so I can't see the wreckage
from here, but I hear sirens headed downtown about every three or four
minutes. MSNBC.com says there's a rumor that the planes were hijacked.

Just saw the live photos on tv. a plane did strike one of the WTC towers'

From what I've been able to find out, it looks like 2
planes crashed into the towers, about 18 minutes
apart.
Suspected terrorism, but that's about all that I've
seen so far.

I'm sure by now everyone has radios, TV and computers going. We have a
cable hook up here and the latest news is three separate planes (reported to
be hijacked) have crashed into buildings. One into one tower of the World
Trade Center, the second into the other tower of the World Trade Center
(which just collapsed onto the street) and a small commuter plane into the
Pentagon. ABC also just reported of a possible bomb blast at the U.S.
Capitol. All U.S. airports are closed. I am located in a highly militarized
area. All local bases are locked down.
I am sure we have lost colleagues in this horrific disaster. My heart
is very heavy with grief for the innocent people who not only were used as
weapons but who were attacked.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in
harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet
crashes into significant buildings.
* In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center
in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the
second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.
* About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, part of which
later collapsed.
* American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents:"
Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard and Flight 77
from Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both
planes were en route to Los Angeles
* United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San
Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial
reports indicated no survivors. It was not known if this was connected to
the attacks. United also said it was "deeply concerned" about Flight l75
from Boston to Los Angeles.
* The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice
Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in
Washington evacuated.
* President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington,
calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy."
* In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide
have been stopped at their departure airports.
* All international flights were diverted to Canada.
* In New York, more than 10,000 rescue personnel rushed to the scene. The
entire downtown area of Manhattan was evacuated as far north as Rockefeller
Center, according to an official at an emergency command post.
* Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.
* The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated.
CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.
* Philadelphia landmarks were also evacuated.
* In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York
evacuated.
* The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels
into the city.
* U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks

I thought I was just a geek...
...but with my social ineptitude factored in, it looks as though I'm actually a nerd. Nice to know.
(via: BuzzFeed)
Would it be too geeky nerdy to also point out that today is the 9th day of the 9th month of the 9th year? It's just cool, that's all.

10 bad habits I can't quit

1. Smoking (It's nasty, I know.)
2. Chewing my fingernails (I'm always catching myself gnawing on a finger!)
3. Doodling during meetings (I'm actually listening, but I worry other people won't think so.)
4. Going to bed with my make-up on (Yeah, I'm lazy.)
5. Chewing ice (It drove my mother nuts when I was growing up.)
6. Gossiping (I should probably be using my powers for good instead of evil.)
7. Talking too loudly (I'm a loud talker from a long line of loud talkers. My family's motto is, "Whoever shouts the loudest wins.")
8. Wasting time (Does it count that I'm really, really good at it?)
9. Being inactive/not exercising (We've already established that I'm lazy.)
10. Emotional eating (Boredom, stress, fatigue, anger, anxiety, sadness ... hell, even happiness can cause me to eat out of control. I've been working on this one.)

Getting back on the horse

I bought a new car! It's practically exactly the same as my old car, right down to the color (grey). Except this one's a 2009.
With it being the long weekend and all, I have to wait till Tuesday evening to bring it home, though. I can hardly wait!
Oh, and I can talk to it. Seriously. It has Microsoft SYNC, which means I can answer my cellphone (or make calls) just by talking to the car. I can also select songs on my iPod simply by talking to the car.
I think I'm going to call it KITT.

Enough already!
First I get rear-ended on my way to work.
Then the insurance company tells me my car is not going to be repaired — it's a write-off. (Damn! It was 2 years old and only had 33,000 km on it! (that's about 20,000 miles for you metric-challenged folks)).
And last but not least, I find out that I didn't get the fabulous job I applied for.
I'm glad it's a long weekend. I need to lick my wounds and wallow in my own crapulence for a few days.

Stress
During a stressful event, neurotransmitters suppress activity in areas at the front of the brain concerned with short-term memory, which allows the person to react quickly to the stressor. At the same time, neurotransmitters signal the hippocampus to store the experience in long-term memory.
I'm driving a rental car until I find out when (or if) they can fix my poor little car. I'm so hypervigilant now when I'm behind the wheel that I have a raging headache by the time I get home from work. The jaw-clenching probably doesn't help much either.
