It amazes me how often I stumble into situations (read about 2 of them here and here) in which women make poor decisions because they don't have access to tools like this handy dandy flowchart!
I think I'll post a copy of it in the ladies' room at work.

Final update
After a long battle with stage IV neruorblastoma cancer, five-year-old Noah Biorkman passed away on Monday, November 23 at 8:02 am.
His family issued the following statement:
"Scott and I, along with our families, would like to thank everyone for the continued support over the past few years during Noah’s illness. As most of you know, Noah has received more than 1 million Christmas cards over the past few weeks. The outpouring of love and compassion has been remarkable and we are extremely grateful. We are now asking for everyone please respect our privacy during this very difficult time. The funeral services will be for family only. We are asking that instead of sending cards and flowers to Scott and me; please make a donation in Noah’s name to either of the organizations below. With your donation, Noah’s legacy will live on for many years to come, if not forever."
So many cards and gifts came from around the world to fulfill Noah's Christmas wish, the family had to rent storage to contain the packages.
Noah had been fighting cancer since he was 3 years old. He was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in February 2007 and went into remission six months later, but relapsed in September 2008.
He said an angel figurine ornament was his favorite because it reminded him of where he'll soon be.
"In heaven I'm going to be an angel," Noah said.
Donations can be sent to:
Department of Pediatrics and Oncology
University of Michigan
1500 East Medical Center Drive

Checks payable to: The University of Michigan -- Noah’s Pediatric Oncology Fund

Color quiz

I took the ColorQuiz personality test. It's dead simple — simply click the color you like the best, then the color you like next best, and so on. My results are actually fairly accurate.
Your Existing Situation
Craves change and new things, always looking for new adventures and activities. Becomes restless and frustrated when she has to wait too long for things to develop. Her impatience leads to irritability and a desire to move on to the next project.
Your Stress Sources
Seeks freedom and the chance to do as she wishes; avoids restrictions or things that try to hold her back. Feels an intense amount of pressure being put on her and would like a chance to escape in order to do the things she wants and needs to do for herself. However, she lacks the determination and motivation to escape and pursue her own personal gains.
Your Restrained Characteristics
Open and emotionally involved in relationships and easily finds satisfaction through sexual activity.
Self-centered, tends to take things personally and is easily offended, which leaves her feeling isolated.
Feels as if too many walls and obstacles are standing in her way and that she is being forced to make compromises. She needs to put her own needs on hold for the time being.
Your Desired Objective
Highly optimistic and outgoing personality. Loves to learn new and exciting things, and craves new interests. Looking for a well-rounded life full of success and new experiences. Does not allow herself to be overcome with negative thoughts or self-doubt. Takes life head on, with enthusiasm.
Your Actual Problem
Fights resistance or limitations, and insists she is free to develop in her own way. Rewarded by accomplishing things on her own, with little to no help from others.
Your Actual Problem #2
Feeling tension and stress brought on by situations which are out of her control leaves her feeling helpless, anxious, and inadequate. She escapes the situation by throwing herself into new activities and insisting she get her own way. Appears to be in control of himself, which she isn't, leading to outbursts of anger.

10 things I'm thankful for

Here in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October, but it never hurts to remind ourselves of the things we're thankful for, no matter what time of year it is.
1. I'm thankful for my daughter. I'm fairly certain she's the reason I was born.
2. I'm thankful for my husband. We've been together for almost 25 years now and I plan on being with him for at least another 50.
3. I'm thankful for my friend G. She often knows me better than I know myself.
4. I'm thankful for my health, and that of my family. Really thankful.
5. I'm thankful that my husband and I both have jobs. Neither of us are very happy with our jobs right now, but we do realize how lucky we are to have them.
6. I'm thankful to live in one of the most awesome countries in the entire world: Canada!
7. I'm thankful for modern conveniences like computers, cars, electricity, telephones, the internet ... I don't even want to know what it's like to live without them!
8. I'm thankful for the kindness of strangers. I love it when someone I don't know smiles at me or says or does something nice, just because. Sadly, it's getting to be kind of rare.
9. I'm thankful for music. It lifts me up.
10. I'm thankful for laughter. It makes life worth living. I once went 6 whole months without even smiling and during that time I learned that laughter is something to be cherished.

Burn baby, burn

(via: Surviving the World)
I haven't read any of the Twilight books, nor do I plan on seeing the movies. They just seem too annoyingly overhyped for me. And now Erin O'Brien has pointed out something I hadn't considered and it makes me even more determined not to get sucked into that undead world:
If the obsessive boyfriend antics aren't bad enough, Stephenie Meyer commits an unconscionable transgression in the fourth Twilight book, Breaking Dawn.
On their honeymoon, Edward and Bella (still human) consummate their marriage. That part is handled tastefully enough in a pan-to-the-moon sort of way. The next morning, however, Bella is bruised all over because of their physical inequity. Edward is apologetic. Bella tells him that it's nothing and is eager for more sex.
Hey, Steph? Did it occur to you that you just subliminally endorsed the standard abuse template in the most indelible way in front of every tween from New York to California?
Read the rest of her post here.
I'm thrilled that Child (who is 11) hasn't discovered Twilight yet. Lately she's been obsessed with the Ember books and novels by Neil Gaiman (Stardust and The Graveyard Book). She's getting her fill of sci-fi, fantasy and the supernatural without the pro-stalking/pro-abuse messages. And that's just fine with me.

Now I just need to work on becoming a billionaire

Are you a nerd, a geek, or a dork?
For The Record:
A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in all three, earning you the title of: Outcast Genius.
Outcast geniuses usually are bright enough to understand what society wants of them, and they just don't care! They are highly intelligent and passionate about the things they know are *truly* important in the world. Typically, this does not include sports, cars or make-up, but it can on occassion (and if it does then they know more than all of their friends combined in that subject).
Outcast geniuses can be very lonely, due to their being outcast from most normal groups and too smart for the room among many other types of dorks and geeks, but they can also be the types to eventually rule the world, ala Bill Gates, the prototypical Outcast Genius.
Congratulations!

Thursday thirteen: book 'em!

I saw this book title meme on At Home With Books and had to try it for myself, so I'm combining it with my Thursday 13 this week. It just happens to have 13 questions, so it works out perfectly.
What To Do: Using only books you have read this year (2009), answer these questions. Try not to repeat a book title. It’s a lot harder than you think!
Describe yourself: Lone Wolf (by Linwood Barclay)
How do you feel: Dead and Alive (by Dean Koontz)
Describe where you currently live: Too Close to Home (by Linwood Barclay)
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? The Martian Chronicles (by Ray Bradbury)
Your favorite form of transportation: Free-Range Chickens (by Simon Rich)
Your best friend is: Tarzan of the Apes (by Edgar Rice Burroughs)
You and your friends are: The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death (by Laurie Notaro)
What’s the weather like: Stone Rain (by Linwood Barclay)
You fear: What the Dog Saw (by Malcolm Gladwell)
What is the best advice you have to give: Everything's Eventual (by Stephen King)
Thought for the day: Pure Drivel (by Steve Martin)
How I would like to die: 5 People Who Died During Sex (by Karl Shaw)
My soul’s present condition: Fear the Worst (by Linwood Barclay)
Try the book title meme yourself!

Manic Monday

You have a brain tumor. Though there is no discomfort at the moment, this tumor would unquestionably kill you in six months. However, your life can (and will) be saved by an operation; the only downside is that there will be a brutal incision to your frontal lobe. After the surgery, you will be significantly less intelligent. You will still be a fully functioning adult, but you will be less logical, you will have a terrible memory, and you will have little ability to understand complex concepts or difficult ideas. The surgery is in two weeks.
How do you spend the next fourteen days?
First of all, I've always had a terrible memory and my husband would argue that I already have trouble understanding complex concepts and difficult ideas. But I do pride myself on being intelligent and logical, dammit!
That being said, I think I would take the 2 weeks off and go to Disneyland with my husband and daughter. It’s our favorite vacation spot and we could easily spend 14 days there just being together, having fun and forgetting that I probably wouldn’t be myself afterward.
Every person you have ever slept with is invited to a banquet where you are the guest of honor. No one will be in attendance except you, the collection of your former lovers, and the catering service. After the meal, you are asked to give a fifteen-minute speech to the assembly.
What do you talk about?
This one’s easy. Since it would be me and a "collection" of my former lovers, it would be a very intimate dinner indeed. :o)
I would spend the 15 minutes telling my husband how much I adore him and how lucky I have been to know him for the last 24 years (almost 25!).
You have won a prize. The prize has two options, and you can choose either (but not both). The first option is a year in Europe with a monthly stipend of $2,000. The second option is ten minutes on the moon.
Which option do you select?
Europe! I know spending 10 minutes on the moon would mean I’d be doing something that hardly anyone else has ever done, whereas experiencing Europe is something that millions of people have done. But, since I’ve never done either one, I’d rather savor a year in Europe.

Meep bleeped?

Have you heard about the high school in Massachusetts that has banned a filthy, obscene word?
What is that word, you ask? Why, it's "meep".
That's right, a principal has banned the use of a nonsense word!
Danvers High parents recently got a call saying their children could face suspension if students said or displayed the word "meep" at school.
Apparently, kids were using the word in the halls and disrupting class.
The principal says he doesn’t know what the word means, but says any student using it as a form of disrespect will face consequences.
meep => can mean whatever you want it to mean, but the most popular uses are:
1. An exclamation akin to 'ouch' or 'uh oh..'
2. Filling in the blanks where other (rude) words would go.
3. A greeting! I personally say meep instead of Hello...
4. A random expression of happiness used to fill gaps in conversation.
Everyone from GeekDad to Theodora Michaels (attorney) has weighed in on this very serious matter.
It's just like the time when TJ and the kids on Recess got in trouble for using the word "whomps" (watch the episode here).
whomps => is used to describe basically anything...its meaning is determined by the person using it. As a general rule, it is used to describe something or a situation that is undesirable.
Of course, Recess was just a cartoon. A cartoon that was making fun of the absurdities of real life.

What's your sign?
ARIES
With your short attention span, Aries, your choice of Moose Tracks ice cream more often than not makes a statement. As you're still a kid at heart, an old-fashioned sugar cone with one scoop of chocolate chip ice cream can whirl you back to Mom and childhood at a dizzying speed.
Does it make sense to anyone else that an astrological sign can predict a person's ice cream preference?
P.S. I'm actually not wild about ice cream, but I don't mind a scoop of chocolate/peanut butter in a waffle cone once every couple of years. Moose Tracks sounds like it might just fit the bill.

Another Christmas wish update
Further to my previous posts, here and here...
From Noah's CarePage November 11, 2009:
Wow!! Thanks! Please STOP!!!!
Wow! The outpouring of love and concern for Noah is just amazing! Scott and I never in a million years thought that so many people would want to send Christmas cards to Noah. However, please note: We did already celebrate Christmas LAST Sunday -- November 8th.
PLEASE STOP SENDING CARDS AND GIFTS!!!!
Noah is very ill. He is not getting out of bed and it's time for Scott, our families, and I to concentrate on our son. His time is very short and he needs us.
Scott and I would like to say thank you so much for the support and continued show of love. However, we are asking that everyone please stop sending cards and gifts.
Also, everyone please post the stop order on Facebook and any other websites or organizations that you belong to. We need the peace right now.
Thank you for your understanding in this request.
(via: Project Take Action)
I wish Noah and his family all the best for the time they have left together.

Lest we forget

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields. ~ John McCrae

Passionate, introspective, and pessimistic ... that's me!

Passionate
You are in touch with your emotions, and sometimes you react before you think. The good news: you don't tamp down your feelings. The bad news: you sometimes say or do things that you later wish you could take back.
You do not live your life on an even keel; you do not go for long periods without experiencing some mood swings.
Introspective
You like your own company; you're a very interesting person. Tracking your own mental processes, knowing what you're thinking and why you do what you do, is important to you. Often, what's going on in your mind is more compelling than what's going on outside. For the most part, those with a high score on the "introspective" trait enjoy reading, taking long walks, learning new things, and other solitary activities.
You are not someone who is constantly looking to be among a group of friends; you never feel bored when you are by yourself.
Pessimistic
You tend to be a "glass half-empty" kind of person, which for you is simply a realistic outlook. Your feeling is that this world can be a depressing place, and only a fool would think otherwise.
You do not waste your time searching for the silver lining in every cloud, nor do you believe it's your job to cheer up the people around you with happy talk.
Impassioned
You have strong opinions and high standards. When others let you down, you're not opposed to giving them a piece of your mind, even if it sometimes mean hurting their feelings.
You are not necessarily a "live and let live" kind of person. You don't always make allowances for others' incompetence or allow annoyances to wash over you. You don't feel it's your job to make everyone feel relaxed and comfortable regardless of whether they've earned it.
Volatile
You go with the flow when it comes to your emotions. Whether you're happy or sad, you show it, and when something upsets you, or you're feeling stressed out, those around you will know it right away.
You are not necessarily the one person in any group who can be depended on to stay calm, cool, and collected in a crisis; you aren't known for keeping your emotions under wraps.
Unsettled
You may be comfortable on your home turf, but you have a tendency to be self-conscious in an unfamiliar environment. While you're usually at ease with your friends, you can be a little skittish around strangers.
You usually don't feel at home in unfamiliar settings or with new people. When you get rattled, you don't necessarily recover instantly.
Abrasive
You are accustomed to rubbing people the wrong way; it's simply what happens when you express your opinions. In your opinion, there's nothing wrong with being controversial.
You don't have a "live and let live" attitude when it comes to other people whose opinions clash with yours; you see no reason to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who is just plain wrong.
Innovative
You come up with a lot of ideas; if one doesn't work out, there's always another waiting in the wings. You often have interesting solutions to difficult problems. You're practically a one-person brainstorming session.
You are less interested changing the world than in dealing with things as they are. Unlike those who spend all their time trying to solve problems, you prefer to zero in on things that work and stick with them.
Creative
You are good at solving problems, coming up with original ideas, and seeing connections between things, connections that most other people miss. People with a high score on the "creative" trait often are employed in such fields as finance and scientific research, and enjoy avant garde and classical music as well as literary fiction and scholarly non-fiction.
You do not shun abstractions and concepts in favor of the concrete and tangible.
Intellectual
You are thoughtful, rational, and comfortable in the world of ideas. People find you interesting to talk to. You're the living embodiment of the saying "You learn something new every day." In general, those with a high score on the "intellectual" trait are employed in such fields as teaching and research, and are enthusiastic about reading, foreign films, and classical music.
You do not avoid abstract conversation, experimenting with new ideas, or studying new things. It bores you to stick to the straight and narrow of what you already know.

10 favorite song remakes

Call me weird, but I love cover tunes. Oh, occasionally one will irritate me and make me wonder why the heck they remade such a classic song. But, for the most part, I really enjoy listening to reworkings of familiar songs. I think it's because I like to sing along and it's so much easier when I already know all the words.
As with all of my lists of "favorites," these are my ten faves for today only (in no particular order). I have no idea what my top 10 might be tomorrow.
1. All By Myself ~ The Rescues
(original: Eric Carmen, 1975)
[YouTube link]
2. Here Comes the Sun ~ Sheryl Crow
(original: The Beatles, 1969)
[YouTube link]
3. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) ~ MxPx
(original: The Proclaimers, 1988)
[YouTube link]
4. ...Baby One More Time ~ Fountains of Wayne
(original: Britney Spears, 1998)
[YouTube link]
5. Real Love ~ Regina Spektor
(original: John Lennon, 1988)
[YouTube link]
6. Is She Really Going Out with Him? ~ Goldfinger
(original: Joe Jackson, 1978)
[YouTube link]
7. Flowers on the Wall ~ Eric Heatherly
(original: The Statler Brothers, 1965)
[YouTube link]
8. Holding Out For a Hero ~ Frou Frou
(original: Bonnie Tyler, 1984)
[YouTube link]
9. Big Yellow Taxi ~ Counting Crows
(original: Joni Mitchell, 1970)
[YouTube link]
10. Lovers in a Dangerous Time ~ Barenaked Ladies
(original: Bruce Cockburn, 1984)
11. (I couldn't decide on just 10, so here's a bonus song!)
Route 66 ~ John Mayer
(original: Nat King Cole, 1946 — although the best known recording was the 1961 version by Chuck Berry)

Manic Monday

I thought I'd try out Manic Monday this week. The questions are tough!
What does it mean to you to have courage?
I always tell my daughter that being brave (or having courage) doesn't mean you're not afraid. Everybody's afraid. Being brave means that even though you're afraid, you face that thing you're afraid of anyway.
Is your favorite time the past, present or the future?
I love thinking fondly of the past, but my feet are firmly planted in the present.
What makes you a good person?
Wow, this is a hard one. I sometimes wonder if I even am a good person. *sigh*
Oh well, since the jury's still out on whether I'm good or not, the internet has some helpful advice for me in the meantime:
While every person's journey is different, being good has a lot to do with discovering yourself and your role in the world. Here's how to be a good person on your own terms.

Christmas wish update
from: Project Take Action
Help Grant Noah's Wish!
Hi Everyone..
Diana Biorkman needs your help in making her son's wish come true. She has a 5 year old son, Noah, in the last stages of a 2.5 year battle with Neuroblastoma Cancer.
Noah was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma in February 2007. He went into remission in August 2007. In September 2008, Noah relapsed with lesions in his right arm and right leg. After going through six different trials, the cancer continues to spread...
At this time, they are celebrating Christmas this weekend because they do not think he will make it through the season. He asked his mom if she could have his friends send him Christmas cards or ornaments for Christmas.
All he wanted was to see how many people love him.
&
The response has been absolutely amazing.........
On Thursday,
Noah received over 2,600 cards
(NOT including packages & other special deliveries)
On Friday,
Noah received over 5,000 cards
(NOT including packages & other special deliveries)
If you have not done so already, please consider sending a card to Noah and keeping him in your prayers.
Please Send Cards To:
Noah Biorkman 1141
Fountain Viewcircle
South Lyon, Mi 48178
The family is requesting with every card you send in $1. Money received will go towards a trust that has been established in honor of Noah. They are hoping all money will go to the Make a Wish Foundation & Mott's Neuroblastoma.

Christmas wish
From Project Take Action:
Hi Everyone..
Diana Biorkman needs your help in making her son's wish come true. She has a 5 year old son, Noah, in the last stages of a 2.5 year battle with Neuroblastoma Cancer. The family is celebrating Christmas next week and Noah's request is to get lots of Christmas cards.
Please consider sending cards to:
Noah Biorkman
1141 Fountian Viewcircle
South Lyon, MI 48178
Let's see how many cards we can get to this little guy.
I usually don't believe these sorts of appeals because they just about always turn out to be scams, but I checked it out on Snopes and it's real. And it broke my heart.
Children shouldn't die. Parents shouldn't lose children. And a sick little boy who wishes for lots of Christmas cards deserves to receive more cards than he could ever imagine.
We sent our card yesterday.

This is what I look like in the morning

It takes a heckuva lot of spackle to make me presentable enough to go to work each day.
Seriously though, that's really me under there! You can Creaturefy Yourself too! (via: Super Punch)

10 ways to waste time on the internet

Wasting time is something I'm very, very good at!
1. Release anonymous messages into the ether! Send a Tweet in a bottle ... or send an Oceangram.
2. Learn new facts each day at Learn Something Every Day ... or Factropolis.
3. Upload photos to create cards, photomontages, magazine covers, and more with WriteOnIt.
I used a picture that I made at Face Your Manga.
4. Tell the world about the little moments that gave you satisfaction at It Made My Day.
5. Play DeepLeap. It's like high-speed Scrabble. Make words out of the letters you're given, but hurry before they disappear!
6. Generate fake advertisements on the fly with Ad Generator. Words from real corporate slogans are remixed and randomized and paired with related images from Flickr. Try it, it's fun!
7. What do you get when you use Translation Party to translate an English phrase into Japanese and back to English over and over again? Well, in some cases you get hilarious gibberish!
I started with this English phrase: Be who you are and say what you feel: because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
8. Play with words. Use Wordle to create word clouds or Wordie to make fun lists of words and phrases.
9. Type! TypeRacer is a social typing game that lets you match your speed against strangers or friends.
I typed my stubby little fingers to the bone, achieving what I thought was a pretty decent speed of 63 words per minute, and I still only came in 6th!
10. Play the most outrageously addictive trivia game on the interweb: You Don't Know Jack!
