Happiness

happiness
(via: wordboner)

I've been a lot happier at work since the beginning of January; it's because my team is under new management. I'm cautiously optimistic, though, because the last time we got new management it started out promising too and then quickly turned to shit.

G has gone off to her new job, which has made me a bit insecure in the happiness department, though. I have the opportunity to really shine if I want to — I'm in charge now and I can strut my stuff. But it's almost impossible to actually enjoy my new situation with G gone.

*sigh*

Has fortune smiled (or frowned) on me?

Today is G's last day. She starts her amazing new job on Monday and I'm thrilled for her. She deserves to be challenged and fulfilled and happy.

I can't help feeling sorry for myself, though. How will I ever survive without her?

Be the change

From Seth Godin's blog:

Does your job happen to you?

If you're a willing cog in the vast machinery of work, it's entirely possible that the things that occur all day feel like they're being done to you.

The alternative is to create a job where you create forward motion, where you do things to the job, not the other way around.

Take a look at the language you use to describe what happened at work yesterday, that's your first clue. If you're not the one creating the change, perhaps it's time to start.

The bad news: G is leaving for a new job. I'm sad. We're attached at the hip and I don't know how I'll survive without her next to me every day.

The good news: I was offered a new job last week. I turned it down, though.

The really good news: I've been asked to step into G's role. It's an awesome opportunity with more responsibility and bigger challenges. It feels weird, though, that G has to leave for me to get an opportunity like this.

He certainly has balls

Have you seen my stapler

Legend has it that an employee of my company emailed this out to the people in his department when he retired recently.

In regards to the .01% of you out there that are forever whining, snivling, bitching, complaining about what a bad place this is to work I offer the following: Get your cancerous, infected and destructive asses out of here because no one here is interested in hearing from you. Go home and look in the mirror and see how pathetic you really are and it is not caused by this company it is caused by YOU. Most of you useless pieces of flesh only stay here because you are worthless anywhere else.

I have left a pad of Mac Donald’s application with the supervisor for any of you to use if you decide to do us all a favour and get out of here. Now I can just imagine some of you cancerous, useless turds saying I would tell that jerk a thing or two if he were hear, well my phone number is available as well as my email and I am more than happy to have you call me if you need to hear it directly from me.

I don’t expect many calls because a canary has bigger cahonas(balls)then your type of people.

As one of the whining complainers, I think .01% is a really low estimate.

Thursday thirteen: 13 happiness quotes

Today is "Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day," a day that recognizes that everybody spills a little milk every now an then. It's a day to be optimistic, think positive, look on the bright side, and to find something good in everything that happens.

Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities. ~ Aldous Huxley

You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life. ~ Albert Camus

Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful. ~ Albert Schweitzer

Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn't know you left open. ~ John Barrymore

It's pretty hard to tell what does bring happiness. Poverty and wealth have both failed. ~ Frank McKinney "Kin" Hubbard

There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life — happiness, freedom, and peace of mind — are always attained by giving them to someone else. ~ Peyton Conway March

Every sixty seconds you spend angry, upset or mad is a full minute of happiness you'll never get back. ~ Unknown

Happiness is never stopping to think if you are. ~ Palmer Sondreal

The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance; the wise grows it under his feet. ~ James Openheim

Those who can laugh without cause have either found the true meaning of happiness or have gone stark raving mad. ~ Norm Papernick

Even if happiness forgets you a little bit, never completely forget about it. ~ Jacques Prévert

Most people would rather be certain they're miserable, than risk being happy. ~ Robert Anthony

If you want to be happy, be. ~ Leo Tolstoy

It's all about size

Husband (admiring the TV in the back of the truck next to us): Ooooo, BIG TV!

Me: Is he the one shaking the pavement with the loud music?

Husband: I think so.

Me: Mmm-hmm. Big TV, big stereo ... little penis.

Husband: ... I can only see the TV.

I yam what I yam

Aries

You might not be willing to justify your feelings today just because someone asks for an explanation. The truth is that your emotions are not subject to logic and analyzing them only detracts from your experience. Instead of attempting to make sense of your desires now, just share them when it's appropriate without trying to get others to voice their approval. Remember, you don't need anyone else's permission to be yourself.

Child: You know... now that I'm old enough to stay home by myself, you guys might want to do something for Valentine's Day. Y'know, just the two of you.

Me (to Husband): What do you think? Should we make a reservation somewhere?

Husband: Sure, where?

Me: How about a cheap motel?

Child: Yay! I'm gonna get a baby brother!

I'm a PC, he's a Mac

Sad Mac

Poor Husband. He's used a Mac for close to 20 years and he has always fervently (though a little naively, I think) believed that Macs are impervious to all things virusy. Today he got his very first virus ever and now he's all anxious and frustrated.

Unfortunately I can't help him because I know nothing about Macs. I may be a computer geek, but I'm strictly PC.

I actually remember my first virus quite fondly. I had a brand new (well, new to me anyway) laptop with Windows freshly installed on it and a virus attacked the instant I logged onto the internet. It was followed closely by a worm.

It was the first nastiness I ever had to deal with on a home computer and I didn't have a clue what I was going to do ... but I was actually excited about it! After a little research, a lot of tinkering, and an eventual reinstall of the operating system, I successfully removed both the virus and the worm (all by myself!). And it was a lot of fun.

Yes, I know how weird that sounds. I told you I was a geek.

Life is like a box of crayons

What childhood toy are you?

With a pencil in my mailbox

Douglas Fir

Lea Redmond, the amazingly creative mind behind Leafcutter Designs started a cool project this year that I'm delighted to be a part of.

Lea recently received a subscription to the amazing 500 Colored Pencils as a prize for a design contest. True innovator that she is, she decided to turn her subscription into a social artwork project!

Lea will receive a portion of the subscription in the mail each month over the course of 20 months. She originally intended to keep one pencil for herself and send the remaining pencils to 24 other project participants each month. However, interest in the project was HUGE, so she decided to increase the number of subscriptions to 6 sets (of 500 pencils each) to allow 150 people to participate in the project instead of just 25.

Participants recieve one colored pencil each month. They have one month to find some sort of experiential manifestation of their pencil's color and color name: a place, person, creature, activity, etc. Each participant then writes a brief story about it with that very colored pencil and sends their colorful snippet to Lea to post on the project blog, with a pencil in my pocket.

I was beside myself with excitement when I managed to be one of the first 25 people to sign up for this marvelous project. It promises to be challenging and creative, but most of all it's going to be fun!

My first colored pencil arrived just a couple of weeks ago. It's called Douglas Fir and it's a lovely deep, warm green. I'm excited all over again!

Before I popped my little vignette in the mail to Lea, I scanned it so I could share it with you:
