I have a thing for beta males

Thanks to Nerd Boyfriend, I can now get my fill of nerdy guys any time I want. And I can do a little shopping for Husband at the same time!

This awesome site is filled with vintage photographs, and the fashion therein, broken down piece by piece with links to the places where you can buy the individual articles of clothing.

How cool is that?

He slept with me to get mentioned on my blog

April 27 is World Graphics Day, a day to recognize communication design and its role in the world.

For me, it's a day to brag about my favorite graphic designer: Husband!

These are just a few of my favorite Husband-made artworks (besides being a brilliant designer, he's also one heck of an illustrator):

She's dead, Jim

Oscar party invitation

Harry Potter poster

Fairytale Fiascos poster

See more of Husband's brilliant work.

LOL Thinks!

This is too much fun! Thanks to LOL Feeds, I mashed up the titles of my blog posts with pictures of cats and — voilĂ ! — I created something truly silly and pointless.

Why, you ask? Because I can!

Oh goody

(via: Comixed)

With Husband and Child spending their weekend being fanboys (well, a fanboy and a fangirl) at the Comic & Entertainment Expo, it gives me the chance to do our taxes, which I've been successfully putting off till now.

Not to worry, here in Canada our deadline isn't until April 30. I've got plenty of time!

It's like early Christmas

(via: Comixed)

Husband and Child are volunteering at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo this weekend.

They're super excited about meeting cool geek icons like Brent Spiner (Mr. Data), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Malcolm McDowell (the guy who killed Captain Kirk, plus many other awesome characters).

But first they're playing hooky today so they can drive out to Vulcan to see Leonard Nimoy!

They dressed in their finest geek attire, with Child clad in a gold-colored t-shirt modeled on Captain Kirk's uniform from the original Star Trek series, and Husband wearing an Obama-inspired Spock shirt of his own design.

They're absolutely giddy at the thought of seeing (and possibly meeting) Spock!!!

How does your garden grow?

(via: Shoebox)

Child received a little greenhouse from her grandma for Christmas (I say little, but it's about 5 feet tall and maybe 3 feet wide). It was the Best. Gift. EVER!

Child has taken a real interest in growing things and even joined the gardening club and the environmental club at school the past couple of years.

Unfortunately, you can't plant anything outdoors here in the Great White North until the last week of May or you run the risk of frost killing everything. Plus, there's always a chance we'll get a huge dump of snow close to the end of May (heck, it's not completely unheard of to get snow in June!). So Grandma's greenhouse gift was a wonderful idea.

We set it up in our kitchen where it can get sun from three different windows. It's like it was made for that particular spot because it fits perfectly. I'm glad, because it's a weird spot and nothing else has ever fit there (the architect who designed our house didn't believe in 45° angles).

Child started off January by planting some flowers. I think they were wildflowers of some sort, but I can't be sure because they've grown like crazy but they refuse to blossom. Is it because they're indoors?

Oh well, they're still beautiful.

Child bought some mini rose bushes at Home Depot and has been lovingly tending to them. They had flowers on them when she first got them, which eventually fell off, but now they're blooming again thanks to Child's patient efforts!

Child even stuck some cactuses (I'm sorry, but cacti just sounds stupid) and a succulent in her nursery.

On a class trip to the Grain Academy, Child was given some wheat seeds.  Yay, more seeds to plant in her greenhouse!

Who knew wheat grows so fast?!?

Recently Child planted some bell pepper seeds. We told her she can have a little patch of the backyard for a garden this year, so she plans to transfer them outdoors eventually. By that time they should have had a good headstart.

Husband and I have pathetic brown thumbs, so Child's talent with plants is a wee bit amazing.

The only thing you can change

You can’t change your entire life.

You can only change your next action.

You can’t change a relationship with a loved one.

You can only change your next interaction.

You can’t change your entire job.

You can only change your next task.

You can’t change your body composition.

You can only change your next meal.

You can’t change your fitness level.

You can only start moving.

You can’t declutter your entire life.

You can only get choose to get rid of one thing, right now.

You can’t eliminate your entire debt.

You can only make one payment, or buy one less unnecessary item.

You can’t change the past, or control the future.

You can only change what you’re doing right now.

You can’t change everything.

You can only change one, small thing.

And that’s all it takes.

She's so old

Birthday Cupcake
(credit: ananyah.COM)

Child turns 12 this week.

I cried when she turned 6. I was almost inconsolable at the thought that in 6 short years she'd be 12 ... and 6 years after that she'd turn 18.

And then she would leave me.

I expect to be a basket case all week.

***************

Husband and I decided that, since Child is starting to take tentative steps toward a life separate and apart from her parental units, we would give her a cellphone for her birthday.

I'm not crazy about children having cellphones, but Child missed the bus recently and nearly had a nervous breakdown because she didn't have a readily apparent way to get in touch with us. So there is a legitimate need for her to have a phone.

Trust me, though, this phone comes with a ton of rules. I wouldn't feel like I'd done my parenting duty if there were no "I-can't-believe-my-parents-are-so-controlling" restrictions attached to it.

***************

Child christened her phone by sending 6 text messages in under 30 seconds. She then left two voicemail messages, one for me and one for Husband.

She recorded her outgoing voicemail greeting:
Child's voicemail is broken. This is her refrigerator. Please speak very slowly, and I'll stick your message to myself with one of these magnets.

And then she used the phone's camera to take a bunch of photos for a stop-motion film starring her Barbies.

By then I had finally managed to send a text message of my own back to her:
I luv U 2

You too can communicate like a 12-year-old (but why would you want to?) with the English-to-12-year-old translator!

The boy and the sundae

Many years ago, a 10-year-old boy walked up to the counter of a soda shop and climbed onto a stool. He caught the eye of the waitress and asked, “How much is an ice cream sundae?”

“Fifty cents,” the waitress replied. The boy reached into his pockets, pulled out a handful of change, and began counting. The waitress frowned impatiently. After all, she had other customers to wait on.

The boy squinted up at the waitress. “How much is a dish of plain ice cream?” he asked. The waitress sighed and rolled her eyes. “Thirty-five cents,” she said with a note of irritation.

Again, the boy counted his coins. At last, he said, “I’ll have the plain ice cream, please.” He put a quarter and two nickels on the counter. The waitress took the coins, brought the ice cream, and walked away.

About ten minutes later, she returned and found the ice cream dish empty. The boy was gone. She picked up the empty dish — then swallowed hard.

There on the counter, next to the wet spot where the dish had been, were two nickels and five pennies. The boy had had enough for a sundae, but he had ordered plain ice cream so he could leave her a tip.

On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog

You've probably read some of Amazon's laugh-out-loud customer reviews of such products as the Laptop Steering Wheel Desk and Three Wolf Moon Shirt. If you haven't, you really should. They're hilarious!

Not long ago, my BFF, G, was on goodreads and spotted some similarly absurd reviews for the classic children's book 'Go, Dog, Go!'.  Here's a sampling:

Thanks, G!

The cutest thing IN THE HISTORY OF EVER!

Husband, Child and I are totally in love with Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

What's not to love? It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day and Simon Helberg — possibly the most awesome cast EVER.

Plus, there's SINGING! We've memorized every geeky word of every geeky song.

So, imagine our delight when we saw this amazingly adorable Zelda-esque, 8-bit Dr. Horrible vid. It's just so damn CUTE!

I can't come to the computer right now

(via: ShoeBox)

Back in January I pledged to go webless every Wednesday. I'm happy to report that I'm not doing too badly. I sometimes forget first thing on Wednesday mornings and start to check email and blog stats. But I quickly remember that it's Wednesday and I need to keep my internet forays work-related for the rest of the day.

The best part of the day is when I get home after work and don't turn my computer on (it sometimes takes tremendous willpower to ignore its magnetic pull). I'd like to report that I've been using my webless time for long walks and lofty goals, but mostly I've been playing Scrabble and Boggle with Child and catching up on the shows in my DVR queue.

It actually feels fantastic to be offline occasionally. And apparently I'm not the only one who has decided to unplug every once in awhile.

A quarter of a century

(via: wordboner)

Husband and I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary last week. It was also the 25th anniversary of our first date.

Whoa, I can't believe it's been 25 years!!! In many ways I still feel like that awkward 17-year-old girl.

Romantic fools that we are, Husband and I went all-out on anniversary gifts for each other.

He gave me a new bed.

I gave him a new garage door.

(click on the image to enlarge it)

This is my latest contribution to the "with a pencil in my pocket" project.  This green was almost impossible to see on the paper, so I had to go over it with black.  Now the scanner wants to ignore the green in favor of the black. :o(

See my colorful blurbs so far.

And check out what this artist does with pencil crayons (no, she's not writing or coloring with them)!
